This course introduces current trends in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) through lectures, readings, discussions, and practical teaching activities. In this course, we will discuss what applied linguistic research tells us about how languages are learned.  We will survey popular methods and approaches and explore the assumptions underlying TESOL methods and approaches in different educational contexts. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to TESOL with a new focus on a wide variety of innovative media.

We will discuss the work of accomplished writers and share auditory and visual writing prompts (e.g., videos, audio clips, films, artworks, advertisements, etc) in class. The purpose is to help students integrate life experiences and outside resources to develop effective research and writing strategies. Students will also participate in synchronous online peer response sessions in a computer lab as part of the course requirement. The goal is to present clear and well-reasoned prose to the readers.

EL3094
Online English Learning
線上英語學習

This course combines online and face-to-face interaction. Students will explore innovative ways to use technologies for English learning. Through hypertext reading (e.g., online news, media, wikis, and e-journals, etc) and networked communications (e.g., blogging, chatting, podcasting, vodcasting, gaming, etc.), we are seeking interactive learning experiences. Students will also interact and collaborate with other English speakers while exploring new cultures of virtual communities (e.g., Second Life). Based on these experiences, language learning theories and pedagogical strategies related to technology use will be discussed and evaluated. Topics include language learning technology, computer-mediated communication, and critical approaches to Web participation. Emphasis will be put on guiding students toward appropriate use of online resources in writing alternative genres and tasks (e.g., annotations, reviews, critiques, reflections, Web projects, etc).

EL4074
Journalistic Writing
新聞寫作

This course is designed for undergraduates who are interested in learning about language registers of news reporting and discourse communities of global digital journalism. It aims to help students get a sense of “public intellectuals” by engaging with the complexity of ethical and social issues that address a more general readership of global citizens. Students will discuss journalistic issues in newspapers and media online as well as analyze various news styles and language use. Students will then write about news subjects in a journalistic style and implement purposeful productions through digital media. The ultimate goal is for students to communicate clearly and effectively by offering their audiences English news which they can enjoy.
