課程目標: The course, “Documentation and Argumentation,” is designed to familiarize students with essential skills for crafting effective argumentative essays. With a focus on providing our students with transferable skills of exposition, argumentation, and persuasion, the course teaches students to present their opinions in a logical form that actively engages with existing debates, discussions, and scholarship. Throughout the course, students will develop the ability to identify reliable sources, summarize and paraphrase others’ ideas, and use citations effectively to support their arguments and establish credibility in their writing. Students will also learn how to effectively integrate existing scholarship and ideas into their own arguments, using supporting evidence to demonstrate their understanding of a specific social or cultural issue. Served as the second course in the series of our writing classes, “Documentation and Argumentation” offers our students fundamental training in research, reasoning, and critical thinking that helps them present their ideas and thoughts with clarity, conciseness, and credibility. This theory and practice-based course seeks to provide students with critical thinking skills and strategies to write, assess and reconstruct argumentative essays by focusing on the notions of argument, clarifying meaning, and fallacies. All skills will be reviewed in terms of its virtues and limitations. For the writing content, we will pay attention to cultural and social current controversies (course references will include text, visual and audio material).

Weekly Syllabus Introduction: What do we do when we provide an argument? Week 1—Syllabus Reading / Motivating a Critical Thinking Approach: Virtues and Limitations. Week 2—What is an Argument? Kinds of Reasoning. Week 3—Writing Argumentative Essays. Library Visit (Learn how to find reliable sources and different databases) Week 4— Assessing Argumentative Essays: Logical Strength and Soundness. Documentation. Week 5— Reconstruction of an Argument. Citation. Section 1: Clarifying meaning: Virtues and Limitations Week 6—Theories of Meaning. Summary Workshop. Week 7—Ambiguity & Vagueness, Kinds of Statements. Outline Workshop. Week 8—Midterm Assignment Drafting & Review (=Reassessing main course skills and content). Week 9— Midterm Written Assignment. Section 2: Assessing arguments: Virtues and Limitations Week 10—What is a Fallacy? Logical fallacies Presentation. Week 11—Common Weaknesses of Relevance, Adequacy, and Acceptability. First Draft Workshop. Week 12—Final Assignment Drafting & Review (=Reassessing main course skills and content). Week 13—Final Written Assignment. Individual Conferences. 評量配分比重: Work for the course: 1. Course attendance & weekly written exercises: 35% Students are expected (i) to attend class weekly. And, (ii) to engage and participate actively in each weekly written exercise which will involve an exemplification of a collection of critical thinking skills and a close reading of a reference. 2. Midterm argumentative essay: 30% Students are expected to hand in a midterm written assignment which will involve an exemplification of writing strategies and a close analysis of references. The instructor will provide a list of points and writing strategies to consider for the midterm essay. 3. Final argumentative essay: 35% Students are expected to hand in a final written assignment based on skills and themes addressed in the second half of the semester. The instructor will provide a list of points and writing strategies from which the student can select to prepare the final assignment.
Weekly attendance, engagement in written exercises, and careful analysis of references are all necessary to get ready for the midterm and final assignment.
