Inter-Asia Referencing of Direct Democracy among Youth in Asia

時間:2024/10/18 (Fri.)   2:00~4:00 PM
地點:國立中央大學文學院一館A116

This seminar is more an observation rather than an analysis of the politics of youth in different parts of Asia. Not yet of legal rights to participate in formal institutional politics, including the right to vote, youth is what Partha Chatterjee would say, among the unrepresented. Being formally unrepresented does not mean they have no rights. They have the citizens’ right to be taken care of by the state, especially the right to their future wellbeing. This is now clearly exemplified by ‘children’ suing their governments for neglecting the children’s future by being negligent in dealing with the climate crisis. Without institutional representation, street and occupy politics as direct democracy have emerged as the only mode of political participation afforded to the youth. This seminar will look at instances across Asia, from Taiwan and Hong Kong in East Asia, to Myanmar, Indonesia and Malaysia in Southeast Asia and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in South Asia.
