114-1 學期倉誦凝老師授課的EL3063 英語語源學 Etymology (EL3063, Fall 2025 Semester, Wed, 2-5pm, C2-114)

Etymology (EL3063, Fall 2025 Semester, Wed, 2-5pm, C2-114)

The “Etymology” course offered next semester will be an Introduction to the Latin Language. We will follow an immersive method based on comprehensible input and use a textbook that allows us to begin reading very simple Latin immediately. This method presupposes no prior knowledge of Latin grammar or vocabulary, and we will focus on developing reading skills organically. Occasionally, we will also learn to speak and write some very basic Latin sentences to practice our knowledge.

In class, we will work on the textbook, reading together, and I will pause to introduce grammatical explanations where needed.

Homework will include self-guided reading, vocabulary memorization, and revision.

There will not be a midterm/final but several in-class quizzes—and you will be graded on your effort in participation every week as you participate in the in-class reading activities.

Overall, the emphasis is on acquiring a very basic Latin language skills and thereby developing (1) a general linguistic knowledge of grammar and syntax useful also to describing other languages, (2) vocabulary useful for the study of English and modern European languages, (3) a general historical sense of the role of Latin in Western culture.

This course is taught in English, but I will try my best to offer support to students in Chinese and French. Students from the French department are very welcome!
